<p>As far back as I can remember, I have struggled to find the words to say what I want to say. What can and should I say, if anything? What do I think, actually? How can I express it? Where do the words come from? Will they express what I want to say? Will the person to whom I speak grasp what I intend to say? Am I uttering meaningless words, mindlessly by convention, deceptively with gile, foolishly with abandon? I have long sensed that much many-sided intellection takes place as my emerging intentions take expressive form. These proclivities lead me to write with a labored diction and to break my flow of speech with pauses, unexpected stops, followed by restarts on a slightly altered course.</p>
 
<p>Living and working over the years, habitually questioning how perception and expression in their many forms mediate the interactions between thinking and acting, I have begun to question whether some very basic linguistic usages may give rise to very widely-shared misunderstandings that impede efforts to think clearly and judge effectively in important spheres of human experience.
