Opposite the farm, across Route 263 towards Solebury, an estate jutted into the forest. It was a fin, imposing house, probably built in the 1920s with well kept grounds, probably 5 to 7 acres. A 5-year-old explorer like myself found it a somewhat formidable interest. I knew nothing about who lived there except that I had picked up through the tone of speech and words that I didn't exactly understand that the man was shady, having to do with wartime deals that were questionable.
